Timeless Traditions In A
Spent a wonderful day with talented French pastry chef Fanny Zanotti baking Swedish treats in a traditional bagarstuga (baker’s cottage) as part of my Swedybaking retreat! Fanny welcomed us into her snowy world in the far north of Sweden where the wood-fired oven warmed us and radiated centuries of tradition.
Historically, Swedish families baked just twice yearly in these cottages – communal events where recipes and stories were shared between generations. Using gorgeous wooden rolling pins, we created mjukkaka (soft flatbread) before diving into an aromatic world of cardamom and saffron pastries while Fanny generously shared her journey from France to this Scandinavian wonderland, weaving her pastry expertise with Swedish traditions.
These cottages were never just about bread – they were the heartbeat of community life. Today we experienced the true meaning of “Let’s Bake Together” – creating not just food, but preserving tradition and building connections that warm long after the oven cools.
